As a result, our powers in the realm of ‘things physical’ have reached a point that would be considered miracles not too many decades ago. The Digital Age has been a giant step forward for humanity — a dazzling evolutionary breakthrough.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 15pt;"><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: georgia,palatino;">Life on our planet is sorely in need of another breakthrough, this time in the realm of <i>social architecture.</i> Our <a title="Social Systems" href="http://globalgea.net/cms/carousel/systems-are-perfectly-designed/">human systems</a> – <i>commerce, finance, education, healthcare, government, media, etc.</i> – are suffering the consequences of archaic and fundamentally flawed social design. The three major design flaws are:</span></p>

Yet essentially all of the local and global crises afflicting life on our planet – poverty, hunger, unemployment, terrorism, environmental degradation, endless wars, etc. – are a result of these flaws.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 15pt;"><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: georgia,palatino;">The next big thing will not be a thing. Rather, it will be a <a href="http://globalgea.net/uncategorized/the-next-big-thing-isnt-a-thing-2/">renaissance</a> in the <a title="FAQ" href="http://globalgea.net/cms/uncategorized/faq#what-is-sa">social architecture</a> of our human systems. The slope is getting more slippery and steeper every day. Incrementally improving ‘business as usual’ will merely delay the global disaster implicit in our current trajectory.</span></p>

<p style="line-height: 15pt;"><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: georgia,palatino;">Many say that the crises and messes we face today are systemic. This is true. Our <a title="Social Systems" href="http://globalgea.net/cms/carousel/systems-are-perfectly-designed/">human systems</a> — <i>organizations, institutions, commerce, media, economic, political, education, etc.</i> — shape our societal patterns of thinking, living, working, developing, consuming, governing and decision-making. Dysfunctional human systems create and reinforce dysfunctional social patterns. These dysfunctional patterns, in turn, produce unintended consequences that make up our myriad local and global crises.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 15pt;"><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: georgia,palatino;">We want them fixed. So we ‘declare war’ on poverty, on drugs, on terrorism. We invest in quick patches. We problem solve. We ignore the root systemic causes and play the blame game. We try to solve our messes with the same thinking that created them in the first place — and frequently end up creating new messes.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 15pt;"><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: georgia,palatino;">Tom Atlee provides an elegant summary of our challenge:</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 15pt; padding-left: 30px;"><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: georgia,palatino;"><i>The only way to change this habitual unconscious co-creation of messes, destruction, suffering, apathy, insanity and catastrophe, is to change the human systems that create them &#8212; or, more accurately, change the human systems that cause us to co-create these problems over and over and over again.</i><i></i></span></p>
<p style="line-height: 15pt; padding-left: 30px;"><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: georgia,palatino;"><em>It is extremely likely that, despite how things seem, we have more resources, time, and space to make these vital changes now than we will have in the future.  System changing action today will make more difference, and come with less cost, than similar efforts in the future.</em></span></p>

Shifting from <i>Business As Usual</i> to a <a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/future-scenarios-lens-2/"><i>Blue Star Future</i><em> trajectory</em></a> for any human system is akin to a <a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/post-1/">metamorphosis</a> from a caterpillar into a butterfly. It is deep. It is fundamental. It is also magical. Practically, it means that the system’s <a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/our-next-evolutionary-leap/">stories, structures and patterns</a> undergo a deep, conscious transformation.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 15pt;"><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: georgia,palatino;">How do we begin such transformation? What is most essential?</span></p>

By “thinking” we broadly mean our beliefs, attitudes, values, visions, inner and outer conversations and even our language. What would be a more life-giving alternative — a true game-changer with the potential to create an irreversible shift in the social architecture of our systems and the outcomes we see? We are in urgent need of a <i>new thinking</i> that —</span></p>

<p style="line-height: 15pt;"><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: georgia,palatino;">Our human systems are myriad. They’re incredibly entangled. They are stuck in ‘business as usual.’ <i>And</i> <i>they have no capacity to reinvent themselves.</i></span></p>
<p style="line-height: 15pt;"><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: georgia,palatino;">Given this conundrum, most reasonable people would say that setting out to transform our human systems is ‘Mission Impossible.’ We would agree. We cannot imagine an outside-in, push-style strategy that would morph our collective ‘systemic caterpillar’ into a ‘systemic butterfly.’</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 15pt;"><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: georgia,palatino;">What if there was a different approach — a more organic, distributed ‘pull-strategy’ that is effective, scalable, self-managing, self-improving, highly viral and self-evolving? In other words —</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 15pt;"><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: georgia,palatino;"><b><i>What if</i></b> we developed and demonstrated a pragmatic approach designed to support any human system in developing its capacity to consciously self-evolve from <i>Business As Usual </i>to <i>Generative Thinking</i>, from caterpillar-like to its unique <i>Blue Star Future?</i></span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: medium;">Humanity’s evolution through the <a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/ages-of-humanity/">great ages of humanity</a> — <i>Agrarian, Industrial</i> and <i>Digital </i>— has always been led by entrepreneurs, players with the vision and courage to venture forth and pioneer new capacities to improve the wellbeing of people. Our evolution into the next great age — <i>the Age of Conscious Evolution</i> — will also be led by a similar bold, courageous kind of entrepreneurial spirit.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: medium;">The last three great ages of humanity have been thing-centric, e.g., plows, engines and electronic computers. The next great age, if we so choose, will feature social forms consciously designed to serve <i>all </i>life, for <i>all</i> time. The ‘next big thing’ will not be a thing. Rather, it will be an approach to design that is life-centric. We call it <a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/generativce-design-lens/">Generative Design</a>.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: medium;">The Digital Age was spawned in and continues to be nurtured by Silicon Valley. This unique region serves as a ‘Mother Node’ for an ever-growing web of ‘silicon valleys’ throughout our planet.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: medium;">We envision Silicon Valley expanding its capacity for innovation from an emphasis on technology to a full embrace of <a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/generativce-design-lens/">all domains of design essential to wholeness</a>. The <a href="http://globalgea.net/uncategorized/faq/#con-evo">Age of Conscious Evolution</a> will quickly gain traction as we collectively learn to master Generative Design, especially as applied to our social forms — organizations, cities and regions.</span></p>

The Journey</b></span></p>

<p style="line-height: 15pt;"><span style="font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: medium;">We see <i>Blue Star Silicon Valley</i> as a rapidly evolving, ever-expanding multi-year action-learning journey engaging an exponentially increasing number of the region’s human systems. Given the magnitude, sophistication and complexity of this transformational effort, gaining traction in the early stages will require stewardship and support of well established, highly respected Silicon Valley leaders, organizations and institutions. Attracting and beginning to grow <a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/generative-alliance/">generative alliances</a> with these individuals and organizations is the highest priority in this beginning phase.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 15pt;"><span style="font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: medium;">To accomplish this, it is critical to create a powerful ‘strange attractor’ – a rich and compelling Story, the story of how Silicon Valley pioneered the Next Great Age of Humanity. It is a living, growing and evolving story — an infinite game of its own right — that more and more ‘players’ want to live into and be part of. It is a story that evokes genius, awakens highest purpose and inspires commitment.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 15pt;"><span style="font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: medium;">To create and evolve this story, GlobalGEA will partner with a world-class transmedia team. Together we would engage Silicon Valley’s most visionary leaders, entrepreneurs and world-class providers of change expertise in weaving and co-evolving this story.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 15pt;"><span style="font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: medium;">The process of producing this emerging and ever-evolving story will do much to develop a Core BSSV Startup Team. The Story and the Core Team will provide the context and legitimacy for moving into Phase II.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 15pt;"><span style="font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: medium; color: #003300;"><b>Phase II: The Inaugural Intensive</b></span></p>
<p style="line-height: 15pt;"><span style="font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: medium;">The Core Team would then recruit and enroll the founding cohort of (18-24) pioneering ‘evolutionaries’ – leaders and practitioners who are open to the possibility of serving as ‘<i>Silicon Valley Stewards for the Future.</i>’ They are all players with the commitment and the potential capacity to lead a <a href="http://globalgea.net/uncategorized/gail-approach/">generative action-learning expedition (GALE)</a> toward a <a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/blue-star-future-2/">Blue Star Future</a> for Silicon Valley and beyond. This cohort would be recruited with care, seeking those <a href="http://globalgea.net/uncategorized/are-you-a-grip/">GRIPs</a> who collectively can influence the flow of <a href="http://appleseedpermaculture.com/8-forms-of-capital/">all forms of capital</a> needed to seed and nurture this grand expedition toward a future that works for all life.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 15pt;"><span style="font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: medium;">We launch this venture with a <a href="http://globalgea.net/uncategorized/5-day-gale-leadership-intensive/">5-Day “GALE Leadership Intensive.”</a> (Follow the link to get a feel for the broad <i>Intended Outcomes </i>and distinctive <i>Design Features</i> for that ‘intensive.’) The 5-Day Intensive serves as a microcosm of the multi-year GALE experience.  It equips the participants with a deep understanding of the nature of this journey and provides in-depth experience with the other members of the cohort.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 15pt;"><span style="font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: medium;"><b>The main outcome of the intensive will be a shared commitment to begin the serious <a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/3-span-bridge-lens/">capacity-building</a> work implicit in the BSSV journey </b>— to attract, develop and deploy the necessary <i>Expertise</i>, to develop and demonstrate prototype support <i>Infrastructures</i> and commit seed <i>Resourcing</i> — all in a way that helps gain traction in the hearts and minds of leadership throughout Silicon Valley and beyond.</span></p>

Just as scaffolding is essential to the construction of complex physical structures, so complex capacity building needs special support and protection, especially during its formative stages. Examples of such infrastructure might include coordinating bodies, electronic platforms for knowledge sharing and collaboration, R&amp;D centers (possibly co-located in existing academic institutions), an annual conference, retreat space, etc.</span></li>

The Digital Age has been a giant step forward for humanity — a dazzling evolutionary breakthrough.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 15pt;"><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: georgia,palatino;">Life on our planet is sorely in need of another breakthrough, this time in the realm of social architecture. We must learn what it takes to reinvent our social forms <i>(governance, economics, commerce, education, agriculture, security, healthcare, etc.) </i>Our human systems are mostly born in the Industrial Age — and it really shows.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 15pt;"><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: georgia,palatino;">Every one of these systems can develop their capacity to <i>multiply</i> their positive contribution to the wellbeing of <i>all </i>life they impact — to help move toward a <a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/blue-star-future-2/">Blue Star Future.</a></span></p>
<p style="line-height: 15pt;"><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: georgia,palatino;"><b><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Bottom Line</span></b> — Silicon Valley is in an ideal position to explore and pioneer this new territory. It won’t be easy. Historical success can be a powerful anesthetic. To paraphrase Ken Wilber, we will need to transcend the gravitational pull of <i>Business as Usual</i> while including all its existing contributions to humanity till now.</span></p>

<p style="line-height: 15pt;"><span style="font-size: medium;">At GlobalGEA, we don’t focus on any particular issue or problem such as poverty, hunger or climate change. This is because we are convinced that most all of our socio-economic and environmental ills are a result of our unconscious and often dysfunctional <a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/systems-are-perfectly-designed/">social systems</a>. By ‘unconscious social systems’ we mean that these systems (organizations, governments, corporations, cities, media, education, healthcare, etc.) are largely unconscious of the far reaching, often unintended and harmful outcomes and ripple effects of their functioning. It is this unconsciousness – together with the lack of caring and capacity to act differently – that produces many crises and problems that are visible to us. Wouldn’t it make sense to ‘fix’ the very source of these ills – our unconscious social systems – instead of investing our precious resources trying to fix the never-ending ills? At GlobalGEA, we think so – and we are committed to affecting this kind of deep systemic change.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 15pt;"><span style="font-size: medium;">You might ask, how do you ‘fix’ our social systems? Good question. We are big fans of the mantra <i>“All systems are perfectly designed to get the result the get.”</i> In other words, if we are unhappy with the results that our social systems produce today (e.g. unemployment, poverty, wars, pollution, etc.), we need to look at their flawed and unconscious <a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/our-next-evolutionary-leap/">design</a> and ask ourselves – what kind of design would produce different results – the <a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/blue-star-future-2/">results we all want</a>?</span></p>

Our <a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/blue-star-future-2/">Blue Star Future</a> serves as a template in supporting a leadership cohort in co-evolving their ideal vision for the system(s) they steward. We specialize in what we call ‘<a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/chrysalis-work-lens/">chrysalis work</a>’. We create the context/container and provide guidance for these committed leaders and practitioners as they navigate ‘metamorphosis’ for themselves and their systems. This ‘chrysalis work’ involves both unlearning our limited and limiting ways of seeing, thinking, being and acting, and also finding ways to begin to unleash our unlimited potential as individuals and as social systems. Our major social systems <i>(governance, commerce, education, health care, military, agriculture, media, etc.)</i> show caterpillar-like traits: myopic, consumption and growth-centric, and slow moving.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 15pt;"><span style="font-size: medium;">The Monarch caterpillar has been gifted with the capacity to create a chrysalis for itself to transform into a Monarch butterfly. It spends about a third of its life cycle in going through a dramatic metamorphosis.</span></p>

<p>Bill’s career began with Exxon in 1953. He started as a project engineer, later developed the first mathematical planning models of its largest refineries, and then went on to pioneer innovative approaches to organizational renewal and design in Exxon USA, Exxon Enterprises and Esso Nederland.</p>
<p>While with Exxon Bill 1) guided a major organizational renewal initiative at Exxon’s flagship Baytown, Texas refinery, 2) initiated the first socio-tech design of Zilog’s Nampa, Idaho microprocessor plant, and 3) served as lead consultant for the socio-tech redesign of Rotterdam’s refinery organization.</p>
<p>After leaving Exxon in 1985 Bill conducted a global inquiry: <i>Who have been successful in transforming large organizations, and what efforts have best supported those efforts?</i> Then, as an external consultant, he initially worked primarily with Canadian corporations. These started at plants but escalated to corporate level initiatives, including a ‘breakthrough’ corporate merger involving Imperial Oil and Texaco Canada.</p>
<p>In 1990 Bill founded <i>ICOD, The International Center for Organization Design</i>. During &#8217;90 and &#8217;91 Bill and his colleagues conducted a number of international conferences designed to bridge between the various &#8220;technologies of transformation&#8221; — to demonstrate the potential for creative collaboration among those who guide the transformation of large systems. <i>ICOD’s Gamma Learning Expedition</i> series included change strategy teams from Esso Resources Canada, Gulf Canada, MW Kellogg, Petro-Canada, Shell Canada and TransAlta Utilities.</p>
<p>In the late ‘90s Bill served as architect and guide in designing and leading ‘action-learning expeditions’ in high tech and construction corporations. In 2000 he co-founded <i>Pathfinders</i> with his wife Marilyn. Their innovative <i>Pathfinder Circles</i> have been foundational to the emergence of <a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/chrysalis-work-lens/">‘Chrysalis Work’</a>as a core discipline in the metamorphosis of both leadership development and our diverse social forms. In 2007, Bill co-founded <a href="http://globalgea.net/uncategorized/what-is-misa/">MISA</a> – Monterey Institute for Social Architecture.</p>

Building strategically important systemic capacities requires time, attention and ownership from the carriers of the organization’s culture — formal and informal leadership throughout the organization. This would ensure that change is (a) meaningful, (b) well supported, and therefore (c) lasting.</span></p>

Systemic capacities cannot be attributed to any particular individual or even a group; rather, they are a property of the <i>whole system</i> – they, in essence, ‘live’ in individuals, relationships, stories, visions, structures, etc. – the ‘social fabric’ of the organization. <p><strong>Our current state is very troubling:</strong> We are collectively experiencing a growing collective conviction that ‘business as usual’ will guarantee an ever-worsening future for humanity. We’re beginning to wake up to a most ‘inconvenient’ reality:</p>

<li>Most all of our ‘greening activities’ can only incrementally slow our rate of <em>environmental degradation</em>, not turn things around.</li>
<li>Our rate of <em>socio-economic degradation</em> seems to be increasing with no pragmatic overarching strategies emerging that could reverse that trend.</li>

<p>We’re at a <a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/future-scenarios-lens-2/">choice point</a> in our evolutionary journey.</p>
<p>To shift from business as usual <em>(the Red/Orange/Yellow scenarios)</em> to a more generative trajectory <em>(Green/Blue scenarios)</em> requires that we grow up, mature and become collectively responsible. This is a daunting challenge.  It’s new territory. It involves consciously choosing to undertake what could become the greatest evolutionary leap since the invention of photosynthesis.</p>
<p>We suggest that you play with and study <a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/our-next-evolutionary-leap/">Our Next Evolutionary Leap</a> model. Understanding this model and its embedded distinctions are foundational to describing our proposed first step on a pathway to a dramatically more promising future — one where all of our <a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/systems-are-perfectly-designed/">social systems</a> find it in their self-interest to hold themselves responsible and accountable for their net contribution to the wellbeing of all life they affect.</p>
<p>The time has come to be bold and outrageous. <p>This initial description of our proposed ‘<a href="http://globalgea.net/uncategorized/gail-approach/">GALE</a> Leadership Intensives (GLIs),’ can help us visualize a bootstrapping process for attracting and engaging a requisite variety and critical mass of pioneering leaders (both positional leaders and potential change practitioners).</p>
<p>By creating a transformational experience for such a community of leaders/practitioners, and equipping them to envision an ideal 2020 regional/city/organization’s future and a viable path forward, we can launch a movement that could become irreversible.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: large; color: #800000;">Purpose of the GALE Leadership Intensives</span></p>
<p>These abbreviated (5-day) ‘generative action-learning expeditions’ are intended to serve as an introductory transformational experience for all those who will be playing leadership/entrepreneurial roles in a lifelong journey to enable their regions/cities to develop their capacity to support the transformation of their various social systems <em>(organizations, neighborhoods, communities, institutions, governments, etc.)</em>.</p>
<p>The intensives are designed to equip 18-24 leaders/practitioners to play pioneering roles in shaping and implementing a startup strategy for their region/city/organization’s transformational journey.</p>
<p><span style="color: #800000; font-size: large;">Intended Outcomes from GALE Leadership Intensives</span></p>
<p>GLIs will —</p>
<ul>
<li>Provide a <em>paradigm-shifting experience</em> — <em>from</em> traditional ways of seeing <em>to</em> the more generative ways implicit in all aspects of a <a href="http://globalgea.net/uncategorized/what-is-regional-metamorphosis/">regional metamorphosis</a> journey.</li>
<li>Engage the participants in growing a vision of both an <a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/blue-star-future-2/">ideal 2020 future</a> for their region/city, and also a broad strategy for getting there.</li>

<li>Demonstrate the nature and efficacy of <a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/chrysalis-work-lens/">chrysalis work</a> in the special work of regional/city metamorphosis.</li>
<li>Introduce those <a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/wholeness-lenses/">lenses</a>, language and practices that will ensure that this first step of the journey is truly generative for the players and the region. These shared ways of seeing and working together will do much to grow relationships across today’s boundaries.</li>
<li>Produce a founding community of leaders and potential change agents who have a good grasp, excitement about, and commitment to this unique transformational journey. The boundary-crossing relationships, coupled with shared experience and high purpose, will be wonderfully integrative. We begin to see the region as a whole, consisting of interdependent wholes.</li>
<li>Develop a cohort of regional leaders/change agents who have collectively experienced <a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/rainbow-lens-zone/">Blue Zone</a> action-learning — who have the relationships and basic skills to support collaboration and innovation across our many boundaries.</li>
<li>Produce several “products,” e.g.,</li>

<li>Live-in for these prototype gatherings — preferable close to nature. Stack the deck for success.</li>
<li>Design/lead in a way that maximizes ‘generative learning’ <em>(self-managing/improving/evolving, energizing, multiplying benefits, constructive ripples, moving towards wholeness)</em></li>
<li>Would utilize four distinct structural configurations:</li>

<em>* Co-creative Coaching Trios &#8211; </em>These would be initiated early on and would be the primary on-going mechanism for supporting individual “Core Work.” These trios would be stable and meet multiple times during the week — and on-going thereafter<br />
<em>* Systemic Scouting Teams </em>- These might be R&amp;D exploratory teams or special work teams<br />
* <em>Individual Work</em></p>

<li>The ‘trios’ and ‘scouting teams’ would be designed to be relatively autonomous. They would generally meet each day, sharing what they’re learning and vetting their emerging thinking.</li>
<li>Part of the ‘Individual Work’ could include serving as champion/steward for some specific measure of community well-being, e.g., time consciousness, quality of listening</li>
<li>Creating your lifeline and telling your story <em>(probably in coaching trios; then highlight learnings in total community)</em></li>
<li>The <a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/10x-lens/">10X commitment theme</a> will be emphasized throughout the gathering</li>

<li>Each <em>Scouting Team</em> could provide a member to participate in brief ‘review and course correction sessions’ at the end of each day.</li>

<li>This event will lay a foundation for developing a culture of appreciation, co-creative collaboration and innovation essential for a successful regional capacity-building journey.</li>
<li>The prototype GLI will focus on evolving the emerging vision for the <em>What</em> and <em>How</em> of their proposed journey. The Scouting Teams will be a primary means for this vetting/upgrading this vision.</li>

<p>Chrysalis work varies dramatically as a function of the size, complexity and nature of the social system involved. In the case of complex social systems (e.g. large organizations/institutions, cities and regions), chrysalis work involves growing and evolving special <a href="http://globalgea.net/carousel/3-span-bridge-lens/">developmental infrastructures</a> – special ‘scaffolding’ – that support the system in the deep learning and emerging newness implicit in its transformational journey.<strong></strong></p>

<p>Our magic lies in our ability to see the unique genius within individuals and social systems, and to co-design the chrysalis experiences that enable those individuals and systems to learn how to discover, develop and unleash that extraordinary potential.</p>
<p>In the Industrial Age we learned <em>economies of scale</em>. The Digital Age has introduced us to <em>economies of scope</em>. We’re entering a planetary era where our capacity to survive and thrive is dependent on our embracing <em>economies of wholeness </em>— where we awaken to who we are as co-creative beings and who we can become as conscious, caring social entities. Our mojo lies in our capacity to support systems in realizing these ‘economies of wholeness.’</p>
<p>It is becoming clear that our future capacity to survive, much less thrive, as a species depends on developing the capacity of our social systems <em>(education, finance, heath care, governance, etc.)</em> to shift from their myopic growth and consumption-centric caterpillar-like state to becoming butterfly-like, beautiful forms that co-create with their environment.</p>
